The Liverpool Brass Band started up in 1883 with a donation of ₤4.18 shillings, or $9.80. It was an all male organisation. It was not until 1950 that ladies began playing brass band instruments; mainly because it was considered that they did not have the required ‘oomph’. A theory, thank goodness, proven to be entirely wrong.
Records do not indicate the date when the band became known as the Liverpool Municipal Band. Liverpool had been proclaimed a municipality in 1872, before the bands birth. However, it is known that it became the Liverpool City Brass Band when Liverpool became a city in 1960.in the 1970’s the band had a corp of Drum-Majorettes. These young ladies were the first to march in front of a band in the Sydney Anzac Parade.
Unfortunately in 1982, due to the loss of a band master and many retirements, they went into a low ebb. This spelt the need to rebuild the band thus creating a necessity to form a learner’s class. The current bandmaster and musical director Mr Trenton Wright was a member of that class. The band have consistently competed in the NSW championships, never being placed in at least one section and winning our grade in 1995. They continue to perform at Anzac Day and Australia Day Ceremonies and give local concert performances from time to time as well as playing at fundraising barbeques.
The Liverpool City Brass Band is always on the lookout for new members to join. They welcome both learners and competent players of all ages, both male and female.
