Liverpool was founded in 1810 on 7 November by Governor Lachlan Macquarie as his first "new town".

Liverpool is a growing city

Our population was 154,287 in 2001, up from 120,197 in 1996.  Liverpool is one of the largest growing local government areas in NSW.  More than 56,000 new residents have made Liverpool their home in the last 10 years.  Population projections predict Liverpool's population to reach 260,000 by 2019. There are 39 suburbs in the City of Liverpool area which is 305 square kilometres. The current population is over 160,000.

Celebrate Liverpool’s Bicentenary in 2010

Liverpool will celebrate 200 years since the foundation of the City by Governor Lachlan Macquarie in 2010. Be a part of the celebrations, which kick off in January 2010 and culminate on 7 November.

Through active participation, commitment and involvement of community groups, business organisations and engaged people of the City the celebrations will deliver an appreciation of history, a sense of community renewal, a legacy for future generations and promote Liverpool nationally.
